Things to Do

Part of the Granite Way cycle route

There are plenty of wonderful days out for all ages, below are just a few of what Dartmoor and the South-West has to offer. Here are a couple of websites that will help you with some ideas, www.visitdartmoor.co.uk and www.dartmoor-npa.gov.uk, www.visitdevon.co.uk. and www.visitcornwall.co.uk.

Walking & Cycling on Dartmoor

There is a great range of cycle ways around Tavistock and on Dartmoor, both on the moor and purpose built cycle ways and if you need to hire bikes delivery can be arranged to the park. For more details on bike hire go to www.dartmoorcycles.co.uk based in Tavistock or www.devoncyclehire.co.uk which is on the Granite Way near Sourton.

Dartmoor National Park is a rich and diverse wilderness and to make the most of your stay we have local giudes who can take you out either on foot or by electric bike (excellent idea!). Dartmoor Walks & Rides This Way, Made to Measure Walks & E-Bike Tours, www.dartmoorwalksthisway.co.uk ,07914-184220.

If you would like a walk on Dartmoor then we can highly recommend the guided walks arranged by Simon Dell through the Moorland Guides - http://www.moorlandguides.co.uk

Tavistock Wharf

Tavistock - an historical stannery town with links to the Tamar Valley mining World Heritage sites.

Tavistock survives as a bustling market town and is great for mooching about! Shops, cafes, riverside parkland, childrens playground and an indoor pannier market -oh and there are some great pasties to be tried in numerous locations!!

To get a sense of where and who shaped the town of Tavistock there is a small museum with displays of past times in and around the town and every Friday at 2pm (starts near to the museum) there are guided walks where you can learn about the development of the town and it's former Abbey. For more information have a look at http://moorlandguides.co.uk  - highly recommended!

For entertainment there is the Wharf an Arts & Entertainment Centre; a great venue for shows, music nights including Blues nights and tribute bands. The cinema links with the Meadowlands Leisure Pool in the summer holidays so you can watch a movie and then go for a swim. The indoor heated pool has water slides and a pool side café, their phone number is (01822) 617774.

The indoor pannier market in Tavistock along with the Farmers market (every 2nd and 4th Saturday in the month) have a great selection of local produce.

Dartmoor and the Coast

The National Trust has gardens and houses in the South-West. They also organise special events during the school holidays. A firm favourite close by is the beautiful Lydford Gorge.

Days out at the seaside – where to start? Here in the south-west we are spoilt with an amazing coastline, and from Langstone Manor there is plenty of choice from cosy coves like Wembury near Plymouth to Looe a popular fishing seaside town to surf beaches like Polzeath on the north Cornwall coast.

The River Tamar runs from near Bude on the north coast for 60 miles to Plymouth and creates a natural border between Cornwall and Devon. The Tamar and its tributaries, the Tavy and the Lyner form the Tamar Valley now designated an area of outstanding natural beauty due to the natural biodiversity and cultural importance. There is a wealth of things to do, from canoeing, painting to tree surfing.

Visit our What's On page to see a calendar of local events taking place in the coming months.

These are just few ideas; of course you can just relax and enjoy the peace & quiet at Langstone Manor Park!
